ABOUT US

L.H. Jones & Son Ltd, (believed England's oldest inland marina)

Our Marina is conveniently situated just outside the historic and bustling market town of St. Ives, which is located centrally on the Great Ouse network.

After the building of the Ermine Way by the Romans, new road and motorway links have made the old county of Huntingdonshire readily accessible from all parts of the country. The Ouse Valley with its lush open meadows and meandering watercourses provides a treasure trove of wildlife for the birdwatcher, fisherman and rambler. The area is steeped in history with splendid examples of rural and historical architecture and local museums.

St. Ives Town Quay

The River Great Ouse

The river has been of historical importance to the area for centuries, not only as a means of drainage for the low-lying fens, but also as a means of transport.

The river is navigable from Bedford in its upper reaches, passing through woldy, wooded countryside taking in the towns of St. Neots and Huntingdon with several attractive riverside villages en route. The river changes at St. Ives to a more flat, open landscape heralding the beginning of the fenlands. This region is unique, with dramatic open vistas, vast skies and unforgettable sunsets. You can cruise in your boat to the cities of Cambridge and Ely, mooring at secluded waterside pubs as fen lightermen used to many years ago.

For the adventurous, the river continues past Denver Sluice in a tidal channel towards the port of King's Lynn and the Wash. The experienced boater can enjoy the scenic North Norfolk coast and beyond.

The River Great Ouse connects via the Middle Level with the River Nene, which flows between Northampton and Wisbech. Narrow beam craft can navigate through the Northampton arm onto the Grand Union Canal – the main artery of the inland waterways system.

The river offers over 200 miles of navigable waterways with its tributaries and offers a variety of scenery from beautiful wood countryside to the wild solitude of the fenlands – far removed from the pressures of everyday urban life.

Services Offered by the Company

The 13-acre site with 120 berths was established in 1958 and is thought to be one of the oldest inland marinas in the country. The marina is in an attractive wooded setting alongside open meadows.

The moorings (mainly consisting of generously spaced private jetties) are in keeping with a marina designed to be as natural as possible creating a haven for boats and wildlife. Electricity is available on several moorings. Members of staff live on site providing extra security. Ample car parking ensures a short walk to your boat. Petrol, diesel, water, toilets and showers are all available.

The Workshops

The company originally designed and built quality craft to customer's requirements including river and sea-going cruisers, small yachts and motor sailers, many of which we continue to maintain. The boat building staff are still with us today, undertaking refit/repair work on boats of all types including GRP, wood and steel. We produce high quality paint and varnish finishes and our engineers undertake installation/servicing of diesel and petrol inboard engines, outboard motors and outdrives. We have two large workshops with slipways and a hard standing area.
