Banham Boats Cambridge Boat Information

The Banhams family were a well known company of traditional boat builders with yards at one time in Cambridge and on the Broads at Horning. They built quality timber craft (many still exist) and ran a successful hire fleet for many years. This company, was taken over by by Pye Electricals in the 1960s.The site was next to Elizabeth Way Bridge on the River Cam in Cambridge. After a while a moulding was taken from an existing 32ft timber boat which had caught fire, and only the hull remained to produce the Discovary 33, by extending the hull slightly. The donar boat was called Dicovery!!. (The man responsible for this was one Maurice Tyrell who having tranferred from wooden craft to GRP decided that GRP work was not for him so set up his own wooden boatbuilding business which still thrives in 2013!) This featured a timber top and a GRP hull. Some of these craft were built for hire fleet use and others built for private use. Latter models were all GRP.
