Are Locks difficult to use?
The Fenland waterways usually have a relatively low flow and the height difference of locks is not drastic. The locks on the Great Ouse from Bedford to Earith are unmanned and require an electric lock key (to gain access to the control panel) and windlass to operate, both are available from our chandlery. The lock at Earith is manned (01487 841548) and once through Earith the fenland waterways begin and lock free cruising right down to Denver is possible. For more technical information on how to operate the local locks please refer to our ‘Using Locks’ blog.
